Seasonal photo shoots: behind the veil of photographers’ experiences

Autumn is coming to an end and you still haven’t pleased yourself with an atmospheric photo shoot? With enviable regularity come across your friends’ photo shoots in social networks in golden leaves and dream about the same? None of the park has flashed on your avatar yet? Not depending on your answers to these questions, we initially wanted to make a joke about this escalating annual autumn "syndrome" ... But then we decided to talk to experts in order to study this seasonal dynamics and customer needs and how photographers cope with them. Humorous mood changed to spiritual conversation of " lofty matters ", where thanks to the real masters of the art-photography, we can look behind the veil of the photographer experiences, learn about the claimed among photographers and clients styles of photo shoots and about problematic situations at working process and beyond it. So, with MOOW.life shared thoughts a really photo-cosmopolitan girl taking photos around Ukraine and abroad - Anastasia Ivinskaya and a talented photographer from Kyiv Pavel Pashtetov

First of all, we have shown the interest in major trends, desires and sometimes even customers' requirements. After all, only a photographer who works with a lot of customers can conduct overt and covert polls about the main changes in the taste preferences of the people. So, how people are now being photographed?

Anastasia Ivinskaya: Dynamics depends both on the consumer and on the photographer. Very often people are photographed as they can be shot by photographer (too obviously but true). In fact, it's a little sore subject for me and I think about this issue from time to time. The essence of the problem is that our client "eats" what he is given, and the photographers, realizing this, unfortunately, are not trying to develop themselves and their skills. Of course, not all but most. As to the trends and styles, they have not changed so much I think. I imagine such couples in striped blouses or girls in beautiful dresses with beautiful nature on the background. This is the style of our country. Recently, however, I am very pleased that the quality of the pictures has considerably improved. I think that technological progress has affected it in way as well as a desire of photographers to think more. There are many gifted people in our country that do great shots. But the problem is that most customers do not understand these talents. Who needs the sophistication of art? People are happy with just a souvenir photo. And it is right in some way.

Pavel Pashtetov: Thank God that the last time I haven’t dealt with such wishes as "a groom on a palm" or "a bride in a jacket pocket." No longer have we also to deal with hardened banality and wishes, or what is worse, the dictatorship of the ideas from the customer. Yes, of course, the tradition has not disappeared if we take into account the wedding - the same civil ceremony, the same traditions, but now not so often in a registry office but outside. Sometimes of course you can meet a grandmother/grandfather uncle who knows better how to make a shot. It’s useless to fight with this, you’d better take a step forward and meet a photographic need of deeply middle-aged women or a man than to engage in dialogue/debate. This is a proven fact. The same applies to the already tipsy guests who can tell you how to shoot, where the best light is and where you should stay. Again you’d better comply with the request and not spoil your mood. Such cases also examine the skill level of a photographer - his ability to adapt quickly (if you want to be unbanal), look angles, interesting creases of light and shadow.

How should the photographer behave in the situation when a client insists on something that looks not so appropriate if we are talking about commercial shooting?

Anastasia Ivinskaya: If such a situation arises, I always offer my vision, but if the person refuses and insists on his variant, I humbly do what I am asked. It’s an order . The main thing here is not to show my displeasure and try to find some pros which will cheer me up throughout the shooting. For example, money. Is not it an exhilarating moment? After all, your mood directly affects the customer and accordingly on the outcome. But again, the client does not come to the photographer, whose portfolio has only weddings and will not ask for fashion shooting. It's illogical. Accordingly, people come to me because they trust my taste.

Pavel Pashtetov: To be honest, firstly I try to shoot just the way I see or imagine in advance outlining this very picture before the event. I have little practice in photographing on the categorical demands because people tend to have already seen how I work. They understand that it is live footages, without staging, it’s the atmosphere of what is happening now and authenticity of those emotions that prevailed at that very moment. I catch photos so customer is satisfied. Of course I had situations with something like "oh, take a photo of me here," and it was annoying. On the one hand, it is difficult for a photographer, because something that does not fall into your view subconsciously isn’t interested for you. But on the other hand if a person has found something cool for himself in this, then you should try to show it through your hands. Well, the maximum parting words from the customer I can only take in a form of advice on the selection of locations, I mean geographically? rather than "I would like to take a photo here at this wall."

What about seasonal photo shoots, for example, autumn ones?

Anastasia Ivinskaya: First of all you should to think. What is the autumn? Certainly it is yellow leaves. But if you dig a little deeper, it's a special mood. Most often this time of year people overcome sadness and melancholy. But even that can be nice transferred to the photos. After all in front of us appeared the human emotions, their moods. And you can play on the contrast and show not only depression, but also warm and positive awakened during this season.

Pavel Pashtetov: It is very important to convey the atmosphere in photography and nothing can do it better than the little things and details that we see here and now, in this time period, if we are talking about autumn. Since the question is specific, the photographer just need to understand the problem, to make it in himself and "bear" as he sees it ... In general, I would have probably gone into the forest and tried to convey all this rustling noise of the dried leaves underfoot ... I would like to show the privacy of the individual in this environment and in this weather, its interaction with the man ... I would try to capture the warm sunset backlit and a wide angle ... In general, any topic can be created cool, you just needn’t sometimes to be afraid of giving up on what you are dictated and do as you feel. Very often the result appeared to be much better simply because these images have a soul. You can even make the darkness and dullness and also show it in autumn way – it’s up to you!
